Why grief feels so overwhelming – and how counselling can help

Grief is something we all experience at some point in life, yet when it happens, it can feel like the ground beneath us has shifted. Whether it’s the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or another life-changing loss, grief can affect every part of us—our thoughts, emotions, and even our sense of who we are.

Why does grief feel so hard?

Grief isn’t just sadness. It’s a mix of feelings—shock, anger, guilt, confusion, even numbness. It can come in waves, catching you off guard, or feel like a constant weight. There’s no “right” way to grieve, and no set timeline for how long it should last.

On top of that, life doesn’t pause. Work, family, and everyday responsibilities continue, even when inside you feel broken. This can make grief feel even more isolating.

You don’t have to go through this alone

When we’re grieving, it’s common to feel like no one truly understands what we’re going through. Friends and family often mean well, but sometimes their words don’t land the way we need them to.

Talking to someone who will listen—really listen—can make a huge difference. Counselling offers a safe, confidential space where you can say everything you need to, without judgment or pressure to “move on.”

How counselling can help

Counselling doesn’t take away your grief. What it can do is help you find ways to cope, to make sense of your feelings, and to discover how to carry your loss while continuing to live in a way that feels meaningful.

Together, we might:

  • Explore your emotions in a safe, supportive space
  • Understand the impact this loss has had on your life and identity
  • Find ways to honour your loved one (or what was lost) while moving forward
  • Reconnect with hope and meaning, even in the midst of pain

If you’re struggling with grief or loss, you don’t have to face it alone. I offer in-person sessions in Clydebank and online counselling across the UK. You’re welcome to contact me for a free 15-minute consultation—a chance to talk, ask questions, and see if counselling feels right for you.
